KIMONO BOX
DIMENSIONS: 37L x 18W x 8H
MATERIALS: KIRI
A long-standing form of dress in Japan, the kimono remains surrounded by elaborate traditions and ritual practices that apply to how and when a kimono is worn, and also how it is folded, stored and preserved from generation to generation. Following traditional guidelines, this piece is designed to store four folded kimonos. In Japan, the wood used to store clothing is Kiri, a wood very light in color and weight that keeps insects at bay and maintains an appropriate air quality. Traditional kimono boxes use a lift-off lid that fits snuggly around the box, creating a sealed interior space. To fit the client's limited budget, this feature was changed to a sliding lid design, which affords a good seal, but with less material and labor.
