Dubbed "The Chair," Hans Wegner's "Round Chair" is a classic of mid-century modern chair design. It has come to epitomize the apparent simplicity and natural grace that Wegner so effectively unified in his modern yet humane designs. The most dramatic element of the design is undoubtedly the joint that connects the armrests to the backrest. Because of its importance as a design element, I choose contrasting woods for the joining members, a move Wegner had not himself done. In WegnerÂ’s day, plentiful wood meant that curved parts could be cut from thick timbers. Today such wood is rare and so I steam-bent thinner pieces to create the curves. The result is no less beautiful and very strong because steam-bending forces the wood grain to follow the shape of the pieces.
