“Tray-Foil” integrates the dovetail joint with a trefoil pattern derived from Japanese shoji screen design. Like the petals of a flower, the semi-circular pieces that comprise the top and the legs that join them together, radiate out symmetrically from a common center. Continuing this radial pattern, the tray surface is slightly relieved, creating a shape-within-a-shape motif that combines with the grain pattern of the wood to elegantly unify the top as a whole. Every side of a small portable object is likely to be seen as well as felt. To protect these surfaces and minimize seasonal wood movement, the entire piece is finished with a hand-rubbed oil-varnish blend to an equal degree of refinement.
